Blog Update 05/25/2007

May 25th, 2007

The new motorcycle is a blast! Since my internet had been down for a week I called and the cable guy came out to repair it Wednesday (5/23). So I had to take off work early to meet him. When he finished I up I went out to the a large cycle showroom near my house to look at jackets. It gets really hot and humid here in the VA/DC so that factor played a large part in my choice of jacket. I got one that breathes very well, but also has armor at the shoulders and elbows as well as a spine protector.

So far I’ve only been able to play the Halo III Beta once. Will get some more trigger-time in tonight and tomorrow for sure.

Seeing Pirates tonight with my wife and daughter. (Like everyone else in America apparently!)

Will also be working on more releases and hope to get something out tomorow.

Blog Update 05/22/2007

May 22nd, 2007

My internet at home has been down for almost a week!  It has gone twitchy for a day or so at a time before this, but it was always back up and running in no time.  This is the first time it has been out for so long.  Of course it happens right when the Halo III Beta is running!  I am so frustrated.  I was all set to upload our latest release last night when i got home, now I have to wait until the end of the day and do it before I leave work.

My motorcycle is on the road; have driven it to work the last couple of days.  Saving me quite a bit of time being able to take HOV during rush hour.

I’ve had family in town all week; my brother-in-law got his MBA from George Washington University and they had the graduation ceremony Sunday morning down on the mall between the capital building and the Washington Monument.  It was a HUGE graduation.

Blog Update 05/15/2007

May 15th, 2007

I got an email today from the CC3 folks.  (I didn’t know they were in England!)  Apparently my order was never sent over from PRGNow, so they were un-aware of it until I emailed them.  I can see that, RPGNow has had their share of transition glitches as they merge the two sites.  But I would still have prefered to use the software immediately instead of three days later.  But I have it all installed and ready to create some stunning maps to go along with our products!  I’ll post my notes/review of the program after I’ve taken it for a test drive.

I went out at lunch today and purchased a new motorcycle helmet.  I went with a top-of-the-line Shoei X-Eleven.  It cost me an arm and a leg a bit more than I had anticipated; but I figure I gotta protect the only brain I have! :-)   Picked up some gloves also.  I had a discount coupon for both that they gave me when I took the class to get a motorcycle drivers license; so I saved 10% on the helmet and 15% on the gloves.  I’m still hunting for a jacket.  It gets pretty hot here in No. VA during the summer, so I am thinking a lightweight one with good air-flow and a zip-out liner for colder days.  I can spring for a cold weather jacket later in the year if need be.

Anthony sent me an update on the current project he’s working on.  The illustrations look great, like they always do.  I sent him some notes on a couple of additional illustrations I want for that project.

My brother is working on a PDF for me to publish.  Should have the first draft in a day or so.  Something for our Adventure Blocks line.

Blog Update 05/14/2007

May 14th, 2007

Saturday I sat down to finish up a product and realized I had no maps!  I need a map of a tiny village near the edge of a jungle, as well as a map of a ruined monetary the PC’s will be exploring.  I didn’t want to pay to have them free-lanced as I want to keep my costs down.  I looked at my options and didn’t want to create them from scratch via photoshop or illustrator.  So I ordered Campaign Cartographer 3 as well as Dungeon Designer 3.  Cost almost a hundred bucks, but now I own the software so I will have it to use on future projects.  (Plus I can write it off as a bona-fide business expense!)

Well, in order to actually download the software from the proFantasy website they require my order number and a serial number.  Order number is no problem, as it was in the email I got from RPGNow after I completed the order.  The serial number is proving to be a bit more tricky.  It is not listed in any of the emails I got relating to my order.  I figure maybe they will send it to me, and I sent them an email asking if that is indeed the case.  I sent that Saturday in the late AM early-noon-ish time frame.  No response all day Sat, all day Sun and all day Mon thus far.  I just fired off a second email to them since I would like to actually USE the software I paid almost a hundred bucks for.  Thus far the customer service is not blowing my skirt up or my socks off.  (But maybe they were all out of town for Mothers day, who knows?)

I sent Anthony several project to illustrate, and he’s already got back to me with a rough for one of the covers.  How does an Ogre with a huge-@$$ blunderbuss sound for a cover?  Can’t wait to see the final render.

I went to the DMV today at lunch and got the title, registration and tags for my motorcycle.  Got the insurance squared away online earlier in the day; so I should be able to take posession later this week!

The Halo 3 Beta starts Wednesday.  Nuff’ said.

Blog Update 05/09/2007

May 9th, 2007

Sorry for the lack of posts; it’s been a very hectic week! Work has been intruding, and life is taking it’s fair share of my time as well. I think we got the finishing touches on my new (used) motorcycle last night. We removed and cleaned the carberator and were ready to fire it up when we realized the battery was dead! I stopped by and got a charger today so with luck my bike will be ready for the state inspection next week. The weather is turning nice and I’m looking forward to getting the bike on the road.

I’ve been working on a new PDF release detailing “Legends” for Dept. 7 Agents. A Legend is an agents cover story. Some are only short-term operational covers, such as throwing on some brown UPS clothes and driving by for some surveillance on a target.  Others are long-term covers meant to protect the agent or facilitate his or her infiltration of certain groups. It’s coming along fairly well, and I hope to get it out in a week or so.

I got a first draft back for the Adventurer Essentials: Oil PDF. I’ll be sending some revision notes to the author and hope to have that one out this month as well. I have a few projects lined up, I just need to send them over to Anthony for some proper illustration. (And thus I need to line up the funds cuz while Anthony is quite reasonable, he isn’t free!) ;-)

I can’t wait until RPGNow and DriveThru merge so I can use the “cash out” feature and get my money whenever I need it rather than waiting until the monthly pay-out date. That will let me pay for art and writing more frequently.

More updates soon.

Blog Update 05/04/2007

May 4th, 2007

I just got my tickets online for the 3:15 showing of Spiderman 3 for tomorrow afternoon. Getting together with several of my friends for it. Should be a great time.

Was in the used book store a few days ago. I stop in every once in a while and check out the RPG section and the graphic novels. They had three copies of the Star Wars RPG there. I guess I’m not the only one chomping at the bit for the new version!

I posted a new Sketchbook yesterday with some very cool artwork in it. Fantasy Creatures; it’s got a cool War Troll, a Basilisk and a Harpy showing her naughty bits!

Sales are off to a good start this month. I’m going to do a Mother’s Day sale this month. Stay tuned for details on that.

Just A Number

May. 3rd, 2007 | 12:16 pm

There’s been some interesting things happening on teh Intarwebs.

A while back, a guy who was pissed off that he couldn’t play his lawfully-purchased HD-DVDs on his Linux system due to a failure in the anti-copying system, did a bit of hacking and discovered a 16-digit hexadecimal code that unlocks the copy protection. He publicized the code on the internet, as a “fuck you” to BS antipiracy hysteria and crippleware.

The story would have gone away quietly. After all, the code requires specialized tools and technical knowledge to implement. It’s not something that Joe User is going to be able to use to bring about the End of Civilization As We Know It.

Yes, it would have gone away….except the AACS Licensing Authority, which controls the anti-copying technology underlying HD-DVD, sent out hundreds of legal threats, cease-and-desists, and nastygrams to sites that had posted the key, claiming violation of the DCMA over posting of a number which they own.

They OWN A NUMBER.

Sad thing is, the way the DCMA is written, it’s true. This is the purest example yet of why the DCMA needs to go. The MPAA and RIAA have pushed this through as law, and now we live in a country where a sixteen-digit number is illegal to possess, to discuss in class, or to post on a website.

Funny thing, though.

Since the legal threats where sent, people all over the internet have been posting the number. People have posted YouTube videos with the number. They’ve written jingles about the number. Most have just posted the numbers themselves. Over 590,000, according to the most recent Google search.

So much for putting the genie back into that particular bottle….

Enough with corporate feudalism. You can’t own a number.

Blog Update 05/03/2007

May 3rd, 2007

Yesterday I wrote up one of the “sneak pre-view” scripts for the Modern Fantasy campaign setting. I had the idea all set for what has now become the second pre-view, but then the idea for the first one popped into my head and made so much sense that I had to do it. I’m planning on releasing them as free products. Each is done in the form of a small comic book; and that’s how I wrote the script. I’ll get them drawn (hopefully be Anthony!) up and release them as a free pre-view along with some coupons. I’m pretty excited about the idea, but it is in the very early stages of development. Still trying to come up with an appropriate name for the setting. For now I’m calling it the “Pandora Project”.

Here is the written script for pre-view #1:

A family is eating dinner at a small table. A man, a pretty young woman and a cute, little girl. He is clearly in the army; crew cut, maybe an Army T-shirt, but not in uniform. The remains of a child’s birthday party litter the small living room. A banner, opened presents etc.

Little Girl: When will you be back Daddy?

Soldier: I’ll be back before your next birthday.

The woman is uncomfortable. He is obviously headed off to war and is putting on a strong front for their daughter’s sake. She smiles weakly.

Soldier: [To his wife] It’ll be fine honey. My Mom is coming in next week to help you with Megan, and she can stay a few weeks to help you handle things while I’m off. Don’t worry.

Little Girl: Daddy, will you read me one of my new books for bed-time!?

She doesn’t want him to go, and knows enough to help change the conversation before mommy starts crying again.

Soldier: Of course. Pick one out and I’ll read it when I tuck you in.

The Soldier and his daughter are in the bedroom. A typical little girl’s room of four or five years old. She’s tucked into her bed and he is sitting next to her while he reads a book to her. His wife watches from the hallway, enjoying the moment and committing it to memory.

Soldier: [Reading from the book in his hand.]

The lion cubs were busy pouncing on each other when they discovered a dusty book called ‘Greek Myths.’ It was full of magical stories, written a long time ago in Ancient Greece.

Theo began to read one of the stories.

It was called Pandora’s Box, and was all about a woman called Pandora.

A long, long, long time ago in Greece, a woman named Pandora lived with her husband in a great big house.

One day, Pandora was in a little-used part of the house when she discovered a beautiful box.

It was the most interesting box Pandora had ever seen. The box had lots and lots of designs on top. Pandora saw a sign on the box that said “Do not open!”

The “!” at the end was an exclamation point. It turned “Do not open” into “DO NOT OPEN!” But Pandora said to herself, “That is the most interesting box I have ever seen. I wonder what could be inside.”

“The End,” said Theo.

[The Little girl looks confused, waiting for an explanation.]

The End? But what happened next? Cried the lion cubs!

Well, I don’t know. said Theo.

The rest of the story was missing. The pages must have fallen out.

“Oh no!” said Leona. “Now we’ll never find out if there was a pony in the box!”

Cleo and Theo hunted for the missing pages, leaving the cubs in the library with the book, waiting.

The cubs wondered what was in the box. Leona had an idea.

“Let’s get Click to take the box out of the book. Then we can open it up and look inside!”

Click dragged and dropped the box out of the book and into the library. This might have seemed like a good idea, but . . .

The box sat on the counter. Leona was just about to open it when Lionel said, “No!!! Wait! There are signs all over the box that say ‘Do not open!’ With exclamation points! An exclamation point means the signs don’t just say ‘Do not open.’ They say ‘DO NOT OPEN!’”

“But they don’t say ‘DO NOT PEEK!’”said Leona.

And she opened the lid just a little, to peek.

Do you know what came out of the box?

Little Girl: Was it a pony?

Soldier: Nope. It was the hiccups! [Little girl looks surprised & puzzled at this.]

“Hic,” said Lionel. He had hiccups.

“Hic,” said Leona. She had hiccups.

“Hic,” said the silver knight. He had hiccups.

“Hic,” said the green duck. He had hiccups.

“Hic,” said the phone, the lamp, the chairs, and tables. They all had hiccups.

“Hic,” said everyone in the library. “Hic, hic, hic.”

Some kind of floating, green, ghosty thingy had floated out of the box when Leona peeked into it. Now this hiccup monster was hiccuping everyone in sight. Hic!

What were they going to do?

Theo and Cleo came back with the missing pages, and before you can say “hic,” they were saying “hic,” too.

Lionel confessed - kind of. “Taking the box out of the book - hic - peeking - hic . . . The whole thing - hic- was Leona’s idea!!!”

“But I’m a little cub! - hic. You’re not - hic- supposed to listen to me! Hic!”

Theo said, “Okay, okay. Next time - hic - when you see a sign - hic- that says ‘Do not open’ - hic- exclamation point, do not - hic- open it!”

With some effort they got Click to drag the box back into the book. But the hiccup monster was still in the library.

Meanwhile, back in the book, all kinds of bad things were coming out of the box. Pandora had opened it!

Hurricanes flew out of the box! Floods flew out of the box! The flu flew out of the box! Chicken pox flew out of the box! Sadness flew out of the box!

Indeed, all the evils and troubles of the world had been inside the box. And now they were out in the world.

Pandora was very sad at what she had done. She looked at her husband and said, “Well, at least we don’t have hiccups.”

Back in the library, the lions let the hiccup monster know that hiccups were not in the book. Being a mean, hiccuppy thing, it jumped into the book to give hiccups to everyone in the book.

The lions stopped hiccupping. The library was hiccupless at last.

All was not lost for Pandora and her husband, even though they also now had hiccups.

Luckily, one good thing had been let out of the box when Pandora opened it, and that thing was hope.

Hope is a beautiful thing.

Whatever there is in your life that isn’t going the way you would like it to, as long as you have hope, you can get through anything. Remember hope next time things are not going the way you’d like.

The End.

[They pause, taking in the message of the fable. The wide-eyed little girl is concentrating on the story. She asks…]

Little Girl: “Daddy, how did all those nasty things get put inside the box in the first place?”

The Soldier and his Wife share a perplexed look. The clearly don’t have the answer to the little girl’s question.

That sets up pre-view #2 where we learn the real story behind the Pandora fable.

Blog Update 05/02/2007

May 2nd, 2007

We closed out the month strong. I didn’t make as much as February with the GM’s Day sale, but we did pretty good. It inspires me to keep at it.

I left work yesterday to drive home and traffic was nuts, so I stopped off at one of my favorite hole-in-the-wall Chinese food joints to get dinner and kill some time. While they were making my food I went next door and bought a composition notebook and some pens cuz I wanted to get some of my ideas on paper. I started laying out the various adventure/sourcebooks for the D20 Modern Campaign I want to do.

I’m tentatively calling it “Omens of Armageddon”. It begins with the creation of Department 7 and the PC’s being members of this clandestine and extra-governmental, multi-country organization. And we go from there, changing the world as each adventure/sourcebook progresses. I came up with the idea when I created a near future setting with lots of cool elements. I wanted something set in “the real world” and not just made up out of whole cloth. Don’t get me wrong; I love the Warhammer 40K Imperium, and the Iron Kingdoms of Privateer Press etc. But rather than having the Protectorate of Menoth fighting Khador; clearly architypes of Russia and a mix of Catholicism and Islam, why not have a setting where the archetypes are factions we recognize today? Give them a Harry Turtledove twist and change the events of the near future to create a really interesting “sandbox” for players to adventure in!

But rather than just write up this near-future “sandbox” and put it out as a setting; I am createing a campaign saga around to let the PC’s experience and take part in the changes that transform the world we know today into the future setting.
